Responsible gambling
Last updated 17 September 2026
If you need to talk to someone now: the National Gambling Helpline is free and open 24 hours on 0808 8020 133, or chat online at BeGambleAware.org. You do not have to be in crisis to call, and it is not a decision about stopping.
This site exists to compare betting offers, so it would be dishonest to pretend there is no cost on the other side of that. Gambling is a form of entertainment that loses money on average, by design. Most people who bet do so without harm. Some do not, and the difference is not willpower or intelligence — it is largely how much, how often, and what else is going on in your life.
What we will and will not do
- We list offers from operators licensed by the Gambling Commission for Great Britain, and nobody else.
- We show the significant terms on the offer itself, because an offer you do not understand is not a good offer.
- We do not publish tips, predictions or systems, and we do not tell you that any bet is likely to win.
- We will never describe an offer as risk free, guaranteed or a sure thing. No such offer exists.
- We do not market to anyone under 18, and our offer alerts require you to confirm your age.
- We do not target anyone who has told us they want to stop, and we will remove you from every list on one email.
The five habits that keep it in proportion
1. Decide the money in advance
Set an amount per month that you would otherwise have spent on something enjoyable and that you will not top up. That is a budget. Whatever happens to be in your current account is not a budget. If you would not be comfortable telling someone what the figure is, it is probably the wrong figure.
2. Keep the stake the same
Raising the stake to win back a losing day is the single most reliable way to turn a small loss into one that matters. It feels like taking control and it is the opposite. If you notice yourself doing it, that is the moment to stop for the day, not after the next one.
3. Write it down
Almost everyone remembers their winners more clearly than their losers, so what betting feels like and what it actually costs drift apart within weeks. The bet tracker on our home page keeps a running total in your own browser and shows nobody but you. The number it gives is usually a surprise, and that surprise is the useful part.
4. Use the limits the bookmaker has to offer you
Every operator licensed for Great Britain must let you set deposit limits, take a time-out, and see reality checks while you play. They are in your account settings, they take a minute, and a deposit limit is far easier to set on a calm day than on a bad one. A limit you set now applies to the you who is tilted later.
5. Know the signs, in yourself and in other people
- Betting more than you planned, more often than you planned.
- Chasing losses, or betting to feel better rather than for fun.
- Hiding how much you bet, or lying about it.
- Borrowing, selling things, or using money meant for something else.
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy.
- Sleep, mood, work or relationships getting worse.
If several of those are true, the helpline above is a better use of ten minutes than any page on this site.
Blocking yourself, properly
GAMSTOP is free and blocks you from every online gambling site licensed in Great Britain at once, for six months, one year or five years. It cannot be undone early, which is the point of it. It is the strongest single step available and it takes about two minutes to register.
Alongside it, most banks will now block gambling transactions on request, and blocking software such as Gamban and BetBlocker covers apps and sites on your own devices. Using all three together is more effective than any one of them, because each closes a different gap.
Where to get help, free and independent
- BeGambleAware.org — Free, confidential advice and support
- GAMSTOP — Self-exclude from every GB-licensed site at once
- GamCare · 0808 8020 133 — The National Gambling Helpline, open 24 hours
- Gambling Commission register — Check any operator is licensed for Great Britain
- Gamblers Anonymous GB — free peer support groups, in person and online
- GamFam — support for families and friends affected by someone else's gambling
None of these organisations pay us and we earn nothing from these links. They are here because they are the right places to go.
Under 18
It is illegal to gamble in Great Britain under the age of 18, and it is illegal for an operator to let you. If you are under 18 this site is not for you. Every operator runs age verification, and free tools such as Internet Matters help parents restrict gambling content at home.
Tell us if we get it wrong
If anything on this site reads as pressure to bet, overstates an offer, or hides a term that matters, tell us and we will change it: hello@goodbettingsites.co.uk. That includes asking us to delete your email address and never contact you again, which we will do without asking why.
